Construction of the Air Bed

The primary source of air bed support are the air chambers filled with air. A simple air chamber system distributes the air throughout the air chamber while the person sleeps on the air mattress. However, this system is not perfect. If the mattress is adjusted too softly, it can result in a "hammock" effect which would cause your hips to be below your head and feet. On the other hand, if the bed is adjusted too firmly, you can get the opposite effect, or a "tenting" effect, which would cause your hips to be too high. Both of these positions would be uncomfortable, not to mention too hard on your back. This can result in aches and pains, and you will not achieve a good night's sleep.

Air beds are constructed using similar components and techniques. Although they may be constructed differently when it comes to the design and complexity of the components, the quality of the components, and the manner in which the components function. The manufacturers may also differ in the reliability and durability of their product.

The air beds are constructed utilizing foam rails around the outside of the mattress inside the cover. The rails are considered the frame of the air mattress. They keep the corners of the mattress square and the sides straight, thereby establishing its form. The rails also allow the user to sit on the edge of the bed. An uncomplicated straight piece of foam is used on the side rails. The Somma brand air mattress goes one step further with its patented "Perfect Fit" foam rails. These rails have curved-in sides that help to keep the air chambers in place. They also work together with the air chambers to keep the mattress square and also keep it from bulging.
